Launching a new project on the rights of migrants and asylum seekers

2023-02-28

We have launched a new project “Crossing the border – monitoring and advocating for the rights of migrants and asylum seekers”. The project aims to ensure the effective implementation of the rights of migrants and asylum seekers, with an emphasis on the human element, and the compliance of public policies, legislation, decisions and practices with international standards on asylum law and human rights. The project will also aim to increase the availability of culturally sensitive, trauma-informed emotional support for migrants and asylum seekers.

The project will produce an analytical study based on data collection and monitoring in detention facilities, assessing the state’s response to the crisis and proposing alternative solutions, taking into account international law and the humanitarian perspective, including a mental health aspect. The study, its conclusions and proposals will be presented in a public debate.

Regular evidence-based advocacy will also be carried out through contacts with the institutions, comments on legislation, participation in institutional meetings and public comment and position papers. The project will also include the initiation of selected strategic cases raising systemic issues of relevance to a wide range of individuals in similar situations.

The mental health aspect of the project will be carried out through the production of a publication containing guidelines and practical advice for professionals and volunteers working with migrants and asylum seekers. The publication will help an individual understand and respond to mental health needs and provide culturally sensitive and trauma-informed emotional support. In addition, a training module for professionals and volunteers working with migrants and asylum seekers will be developed and piloted. Information booklets for migrants and asylum seekers on emotional support and self-help in the event of a mental health crisis will also be produced and distributed.

The project will run until 31 January 2024. The project is supported by the Active Citizens Foundation, with funding from the European Economic Area (EEA) and Norwegian Financial Mechanisms. The project is implemented by the Human Rights Monitoring Institute in cooperation with the Public Institute “Mental Health Perspectives”.
