Human rights in Lithuania 2020-2021 Overview

The Eleventh Review of the Situation of Human Rights in Lithuania “Human Rights in Lithuania 2020-2021”.

The Human Rights Watch biennial report on the human rights situation, prepared in cooperation with independent experts, covers key developments in the areas of freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and religion, discrimination, violence against women, LGBTQI+ rights, the rights of people with disabilities, the rights of prisoners, the rights of victims of trafficking, the rights of migrants and refugees, and mental health, among others. For the first time, this review also looks at the situation of social rights or the right to live in dignity, as well as the right to health in the context of a pandemic.

During the event, a discussion on “Human Rights in Lithuania in the Context of Global Developments” was held , where together with experts, representatives of state institutions and NGOs, we discussed the human rights situation in Lithuania, the challenges we have faced and the lessons we have learnt in 2020-2021. The discussion focused on human rights trends in Lithuania and the importance of human rights in times of crises, Lithuania’s migration and asylum policy, gender equality issues, the rights of people with disabilities, etc.

The discussion was attended by Professor Dainius Pūras, Director of the Human Rights Monitoring Institute, Morgana Daniele, Member of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, Birutė Sabatauskaitė, Equal Opportunities Ombudsman, Justinas Žilinskas, professor at the Mykolas Romeris University, and Donatas Puslys, Head of the Media and Democracy Programme of the Vilnius Institute for Policy Analysis. The discussion was moderated by 15min.lt’s political affairs journalist Roberta Tracevičiūtė.
